FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS PINECREST HOUSING?

A group of individuals from Emmanuel Baptist Church Bloomfield, Ontario recognized that the shortage of safe, decent and affordable housing in Prince Edward County was significantly impacting the well being of seniors in our community.  The project will include activities in support of both seniors housing and the community of Bloomfield. The result of the merger of these functions became: Pinecrest Housing.

WHAT IS MEANT BY AFFORDABLE HOUSING?

Housing is considered affordable if the cost accounts for less than 30 per cent of before-tax household income. The term "affordable housing”, often used in the context of "social housing" (rental housing subsidized by the government), is much broader and includes housing provided by the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

WHAT IS CO-HOUSING?

Co-Housing combines personal privacy with the benefits of living in a community where people know and interact with their neighbours. It’s about living in a way that’s responsive to a world that has changed dramatically in the last fifty years. Co-Housing offers hope. Together we can build a better place for seniors to live, a place where they will know their neighbours and a place where they can enjoy and contribute to a rich sense of community.

WHO CAN APPLY FOR THE PINECREST HOUSING?

Applicants who are 65 years of age and older and residents of Prince Edward County will be welcome to apply regardless of their religious background or beliefs.

WHERE WILL IT BE LOCATED?

As of spring of 2020 we have acquired Pinecrest Memorial School on 27 Corey Street which closed its doors in June 2017. The disposition process was lengthy but we received support in principle from our municipal government to acquire the property.

WHY A SCHOOL?

The Pinecrest Memorial School is a solid one story structure that is well suited for conversion to housing units. More importantly, this school was built with public funding and for many years was a hub of activity in the community. Pinecrest Housing will continue to be a hub for the community of Bloomfield offering activities such as: fitness facilities, theatre, community gardens and a wellness centre.

WHEN WILL IT BE READY?

We are in the planning stage but have received support in principle from all three levels of government as well as service organizations with whom we will partner to deliver support services to the future residents of Pinecrest and surrounding community. Our current planning indicates that Pinecrest could be ready for occupancy late in 2026.
